According to the EU definition, *disinformation* is false or misleading content that is *spread intentionally to deceive or harm people*.
There are many ways that people use disinformation to influence us, including:
• *using strong emotions* to manipulate people into spreading their message without questioning it
• *polarising debates* to make people believe that the differences between us are much greater than they really are
- *flooding social media with multiple and conflicting versions* of the same event to promote general distrust and apathy
- *exploiting people’s existing beliefs, passions and fears*
• presenting real facts, photos or parts of speeches in a *misleading context*
- *silencing campaigns* by flooding posts with aggressive replies
