Parliament is backing changes to the EU’s *Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism* (CBAM). *✅ What is changing?* Plans will *exempt small importers* from paying for CO2 emissions when they import certain products into the EU. *✅ Who is affected?* *90% of importers* - mainly those who import small amounts - would be exempt from CBAM requirements. *✅ Will this hurt climate goals?* No. Even with the exemptions, *CBAM will still cover 99% of CO2 emissions* from key imports like steel, aluminium and cement. *✅ What is CBAM?* CBAM puts *a carbon price* on the import of products covered by *the EU Emissions Trading System* to *discourage EU companies from relocating* production outside the EU and to *encourage non-EU countries to increase their climate ambition.* *✅ Why does it matter?* It helps *ensure that EU companies are not disadvantaged* compared to companies from countries with weaker climate rules. MEPs have approved plans to increase tariffs on fertilisers and certain Russian and Belarusian agricultural goods to reduce EU dependency. *With the measure, the EU also aims to cut a source of income for Russia that is contributing directly to their war against Ukraine.* Products imported such as sugar, vinegar, flour and animal feed will be hit by a 50% tariff increase, no matter if they are imported directly or indirectly. It is expected that these plans will also result in further diversification of EU fertiliser production, currently impacted by the low prices of imports. If left unchecked, the situation could harm EU food security and leave the Union vulnerable to possible coercive measures by Russia. _🔗 Read more: https://europa.eu/!gNN7HK_
