February 6 of every year is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
When we talk about #fgm, the intent is to address a practice that doesn't only inflict physical harm but also violates the fundamental rights of women and girls, especially in Africa.
Did you know over 230 million girls and women worldwide have undergone female genital mutilation? Africa accounts for the largest share of this total, with over 144 million. Asia follows with over 80 million, and a further 6 million are in the Middle East.(UNICEF DATA)
In its effort to step up the pace and accelerate action to end FGM, YouthhubAfrica engaged NYSC Corp members in a sensitization session on the dangers of FGM and the urgent need to end the harmful practice. The advocacy effort also showcased Youthhub Africa's Virtual Reality (VR) experience on FGM, allowing participants to witness firsthand the emotional and physical toll of the practice. Through immersive storytelling, the VR experience deepened their understanding, fostering empathy and inspiring them to become advocates for change.
The session emphasized the critical role young people play in raising awareness and driving grassroots action. By equipping NYSC Corp members with knowledge and advocacy tools, YouthhubAfrica is empowering a new generation to challenge harmful norms and push for policies that protect the rights of women and girls.
Ending FGM requires collective effort, sustained advocacy, and urgent action. As we mark this yearโs International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, letโs commit to stepping up the pace, because every girl deserves a future free from harm.
