The Extrajudicial Killing of Hayat Sabzal: A Dangerous Escalation of Baloch Genocide Policies
The policy of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan has intensified in recent days, further exacerbating the ongoing “kill and dump” strategy employed by the Pakistani state.
Last night, the tortured and lifeless body of Hayat Sabzal was discovered near Grade Station in Panjgur. He had been forcibly disappeared on July 3, 2024, by secret agencies of Pakistan in the Meeri Bohag area of Turbat (Kech).
In response, Hayat Sabzal’s family held a press conference and staged a protest outside the District Administration Office (DC Office) alongside the families of 10 other victims of enforced disappearance in Turbat. The families were assured of their loved ones’ release, with the Deputy Commissioner filing a General Inquiry Report (GIT) and downplaying the severity of Hayat Sabzal’s case, claiming he would be released within the standard procedural timeframe.
Six months before Hayat Sabzal’s enforced disappearance, security forces had raided his residence; however, he was not present at the time. Following his initial detention, he voluntarily appeared before the Frontier Corps (FC) headquarters, where an officer informed him that he had been under suspicion but was ultimately cleared of any charges and allowed to leave.
Despite these assurances, Hayat Sabzal became yet another victim of the ongoing state repression in Balochistan, raising further concerns about the systematic targeting of Baloch activists and civilians.
