𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘀—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. Racial harmony in Singapore didn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of years of effort, understanding, and a shared commitment to unity. That’s why I spoke in Parliament yesterday on the Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill—because harmony isn’t just about avoiding conflict, it’s about fostering real connections. While this Bill is a step in the right direction, we must ensure that it empowers conversations, not stifles them. Can we draw the line between harmful speech and artistic expression fairly? How do we safeguard freedom of expression while protecting racial harmony? These are critical questions we must answer together. For Yio Chu Kang, this Bill isn’t just policy—it’s about the people who make our community special. We thrive because of our diversity, from our local associations to our neighbours who celebrate different traditions side by side. But as we strengthen safeguards against foreign influence, we must ensure that well-meaning volunteers and cultural organisations aren’t discouraged from stepping up. We must also ensure that the Community Remedial Initiative truly educates and rehabilitates, rather than being just another box to tick. More importantly, we must remember that harmony isn’t just about enforcement—it’s about engagement. That’s why I call for regular public consultations to keep this Bill relevant, ensuring that it reflects the voices of everyday Singaporeans. Singapore is a model for racial harmony, but models must evolve. Let’s not just legislate for harmony—let’s live it. Let’s continue to build a community where everyone, regardless of race or background, feels at home.
