Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki ruled that there was strong evidence against him. The victim, Faith Gwena, 28, ordered a taxi through the inDrive app on November 19 last year. She was charged $2.50 for a ride from 88 Fife Avenue to Riverside Walk in Avondale. Mhembere picked her up in a white Nissan Expert. When they arrived at her destination, Gwena tried to pay with a $10 bill, but Mhembere refused, saying he didn’t have change. She suggested paying through EcoCash, but he insisted on cash. When he realized she didn’t have smaller bills, he locked the doors and drove away quickly. At the Total Service Station in Avondale, Gwena shouted for help. A bystander tried to stop Mhembere’s car, but he escaped and drove north on King George Road.
