*Did Mugabe and Mnangagwa Betray Chitepo?Chitepo’s Death Linked to Zimbabwe’s Most Powerful Names* *Follow Our Channel* https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaM08D9BPzjU3mQyTq0w Herbert Chitepo’s assassination in 1975 remains one of the biggest mysteries in Zimbabwe’s history. His death shook the liberation movement and led to divisions and rumors that still linger today. Chitepo was a leader of the ZANLA War Council, fighting for Zimbabwe’s independence while based in Zambia. In March 1975, a bomb exploded in his car, killing him instantly. This happened just three months after Robert Mugabe and Emmerson Mnangagwa visited Zambia. Before this tragedy, the political scene within ZANU was tense. In 1974, Mugabe and other leaders, including Mnangagwa and Edgar Tekere, were released from prison. However, Mugabe accused Ndabaningi Sithole, the ZANU leader at the time, of selling out to Rhodesian authorities. Mugabe and his allies removed Sithole as party leader, but Chitepo argued this was not valid because it wasn’t done at a congress. After his release, Mnangagwa began working as a lawyer in Zambia. He was close to Josiah Tongogara, a key military leader, and eventually married Tongogara’s sister, Jayne. Mugabe and Tongogara later convinced Mnangagwa to leave his job and join the liberation struggle again in 1977 as Mugabe’s personal assistant. Chitepo’s assassination caused chaos. Zambian police arrested many ZANU leaders, and President Kenneth Kaunda accused Tongogara of being involved in the killing. ZANU leaders were forced to leave Zambia and move to Mozambique, where they convinced Samora Machel, the Mozambican leader, to trust them despite Kaunda’s warnings. Rumors about Chitepo’s death pointed fingers at several people, including Mugabe, Mnangagwa, and Tongogara. Some claimed they were involved in the plot, but no clear evidence has ever been found. Herbert Chitepo’s death remains a painful chapter in Zimbabwe’s history. It revealed the internal struggles of the liberation movement and left questions about who was responsible for his assassination. Today, Chitepo is remembered as a hero who fought for independence, even as the mystery of his death continues to spark debate.
