*Custodians of lands where town and cities were established should reclaim their Heritage.*
*PART 1*
It is now time for Zimbabwe to go back to their roots and re-establish Chieftainship in urban areas because many town municipalities and councils are turning urban areas in the country into eyesore graveyards due to services delivery failure and pollution of the land. Of great note or concern is the perpetual accumulation of rubbish dumps and the converting of wetlands and other sacred sites into residential or industrial areas.
Since the political and government system of Zimbabwe became entrenched by existence of active opposition politics; the standard of living in towns and cities have drastically deteriorated indeed.
A very good example is found in the Capital City Harare and it's sister town Chitungwiza, the might rivers of Mukuvisi and Hunyani, which possessed great significance to Zimbabwean spirituality are now polluted with sewages and other pollutants like litter, used oil and toxic chemicals. The sacred hills like one in Glennorah C are now sold to religious leaders who then convert or use them as prayer Mountains. This act alone is a highest form of disregard and dishonor to our Ancestors and the Shrines themselves, which are actually our Cultural Heritage collectively.
As a result of this dichotomy a place like Harare has become the hub of filth and chaos. While everything within the jurisdiction of Harare City Municipality has become synonym for rubbish. Everywhere you turn to look these days, you witness piles or rubbish strewn along roads, streets and parks. Every open space has been transformed into a dumping park and the City Municipality does nothing because they don't respect, accept, acknowledge and believe in cultural and spiritual significance of the land occupied by Harare and Chitungwiza.
Above all, what the current generation fails to realize is that, the Colonial Settlers actually established *all* their crucial settlements on places or grounds which were really sacred and were used for specific purposes or rituals. Most towns (if not all) were established in such places, while institutions like mission schools, hospitals, police camps and administration offices where also located on the sacred grounds. Part 2 of our article is going to bring a good case study of some settlements like that, while Harare and Cbitungwiza are not going to be left out.
There is tension between political parties to control towns but the area in towns and cities must be controlled by traditional custodians because they have connection with traditional roots of those area. The clan of Mbari of Shumba Gurundoro should reclaim it's faded glory in Harare, Seke Mutema in Chitungwiza, Moyo Shayamombe in Chivhu and the list goes to Hwange in Matebeleland North and the rest of all urban areas nationally.
Royal custodians are motivated by the love of better tomorrow for the land of their Ancestors while the perpetuation and preservation of cultural and heritage legacy is maintained. This is unlike the current politicians in control and charge who are motivated by the love of power and money. The current political and government system should be limited to administrative portfolio only which report to the genuine custodians of the lands they execute under.
Assimilated cultures and spiritual movements such as Christianity, Moslem, Rastafari and Gule WaMkulu are now popular in towns and cities and this makes our traditional culture practice of the doom. The lack of promotion of active traditional culture in towns and cities also makes our cultural heritage practice of the night. People in high density suburbs have embraced Malawi originated Nyau culture but are failing to embrace our cultural dances because they don't know the historical narratives or significances and traditional spiritual history of land they occupy.
The central government should keep the door open for constitutional changes that will empower traditional heirs to take over certain aspects of falling councils and municipalities especially in urban areas where things are currently in a sorry state. Zimbabweans in urban areas have endured poor service dilivery for too long and have witnessed cultural erosion in the same areas. There is need of something radical to restore our cultural inheritance and protect the lands of our Ancestors from this Eurocentric administrative systems.
