*Introduction:*
Missionaries played a pivotal role in reshaping cultural diversity in Zimbabwe, especially through disrupting smaller ethnic identities while strengthening "Shona" and "Ndebele": dominance. The activities of missionaries had profound cultural, linguistic, and social consequences, contributing to the marginalization or destruction of self-ruling minor tribes.
The missionaries strategically grouped the native population into superficial tribal clusters, facilitating the dissemination of their message and values. This tactic not only eased their conversion efforts but also paved the way for a new generation of natives, stripped of their autonomy and cultural identity. The ultimate goal was to pacify and assimilate us, transforming us into compliant workers and citizens, severed from our ancestral ways of life. And, in the process, we were divided amongst each other, our newfound tribal identities fueling suspicion, mistrust, and conflict that would linger for generations to come.
*Cultural Disruption:*
1. _Denigration of African Traditions:_
Missionaries labelled African traditional religions and practices as "pagan," "demonic," or "evil," undermining indigenous belief systems central to smaller tribes' identity and governance. They replaced traditional communal values with Christian individualism, disrupting social cohesion and political structures.
2. _Suppression of Traditional Leadership:_
Missionaries supported colonial authorities and tactfully operated clandestinely in dismantling indigenous political systems, such as the Rozvi Empire, eroding traditional leaders' power and cultural practices. The Mthwakazi kingdom was dismantled with missionary approval, viewed as necessary for evangelization. Our shrines and sacred sites where disfigured.
3. _Loss of Cultural Heritage:_
Most (if not all) of the missionary institutions were established on pivotal Heritage Sites, where they built churches and schools. A good example is that of Great Zimbabwe and Matopos, discrediting their spiritual significance and alienating local communities from their cultural heritage.
*Linguistic Homogenization:*
1. _Promotion of Shona and Ndebele Languages only_
Missionaries developed written forms of dominant languages like Shona, combining different dialects (e.g., ChiZezuru, ChiKaranga, ChiKorekore) and Ndebele for Bible translations and educational purposes, while they classified them explicitly as the only indigenous official languages. Smaller languages like Kalanga, Nambya, Tonga and Tshwao were sidelined or ignored.
2. _Creation of Artificial Dialect Zones:_
Missionary linguists codified dialects into distinct written forms, exaggerating differences between communities and marginalizing smaller linguistic groups. The focus on Shona as a "unified" language further marginalized minority languages.
*The Unification of the Shona Language:*
The Southern Rhodesia Missionary Conference (SRMC) held its first meeting in 1903, playing a significant role in shaping the Shona language. By advocating for a unified Shona orthography, the SRMC created a standardized language for Bible translation and literary purposes. This unification process combined elements from various dialects, including Zezuru, Karanga, Manyika, Korekore, and Ndau.
*Strengthening Shona and Ndebele Identities:*
1. _Ethnic Consolidation:_
Missionary activities reinforced Shona and Ndebele dominance by aligning with colonial administrative boundaries, subsuming smaller tribes under these larger identities.
2. _Political Support for Dominant Groups:_
Missionaries allied with colonial political and government authorities or powers to suppress uprisings by smaller tribes, facilitating Christianity's expansion among larger groups.
*Marginalization of Smaller Tribes:*
1. _Destruction of Minor Tribes' Autonomy:_
Self-ruling tribes like Kalanga, Tonga, Chewa,Tswana lost autonomy as they were absorbed into larger colonial or missionary-defined structures dominated by Shona or Ndebele identities.
2. _Resistance to Christianity:_
Smaller groups resisting missionary efforts faced further marginalization as missionaries aligned with colonial authorities against them.
The Missionary activities disrupted cultural diversity in Zimbabwe by denigrating traditional practices, demoting and disbanding self-ruling tribes. This act alone actually cemented the colonial agenda of *divide and rule* effectively.
The story of missionaries in Zimbabwe is a complex one, marked by both positive and negative impacts. As we reflect on this history, we are reminded that our nation's strength lies in its diversity.
