*Read a note which claimed that small car sales are back in vogue.* This cited the fact that after 11 straight months of YoY decline in Maruti Suzuki’s small car sales, in December, the sales jumped a robust 29% YoY! *However, what it missed are two significant factors.* 1> Despite that big jump, December’s small car sales for Maruti Suzuki’s lowest in all 12 months of 2024 2> In Dec 2023, the small car sales for Maruti Suzuki had logged a massive decline from two months ago (~50% drop) Thus, the big jump seen in Dec sales only holds on a YoY basis, and that too because of the low base effect from a year ago. .. *This is the thing with data.* People use it to spread narratives of their favour by selectively picking numbers and not sharing the context which built those numbers. I am not saying that there is no future for small cars. But the revival in demand for those cars is already here - that is what I disagree with.
