Kenya mourns the death of the former chairperson of its electoral body, Wafula Chebukati, with President William Ruto describing him as a principled and diligent leader. "I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time," Ruto says in a statement. Wafula Chebukati died on Thursday night after an illness. He oversaw the last two general elections in Kenya while serving as the head of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson from 2017 to 2023.
