Yesterday during my Budget Debate speech I shared that ageing-in-place isnโt just about comfortโitโs about dignity. But for many seniors in Yio Chu Kang, mobility challenges make their own homes feel like cages. Some residents at Blocks 642 and 648 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 still lack direct lift access, struggling daily with stairs. I have raised this issue in Parliament before, and I did so againโbecause our seniors deserve better. The so-called โhalf-landing solutionโ from 2008 is outdated, and itโs time for real change.
Thatโs why I am calling for a Special Lift Retrofit Fund to explore compact lift solutions for blocks without direct access. But we must go even furtherโletโs repurpose unused public buildings for senior-friendly housing and push for faster rollouts of assisted living projects. Why stop there? Imagine intergenerational communities where university students and seniors live together, exchanging skills, wisdom, and support.
The ideas existโnow we need action.
