n Parliament during the Budget Debate, I spoke about something close to my heart: senior employability. For many older workers, employment isn’t just about income—it’s about purpose, dignity, and staying connected to society. Yet, despite our push for lifelong employability, ageism still lurks in workplaces. Too often, hiring decisions are based on assumptions rather than ability. Seniors are seen as “less productive” when, in reality, they bring a wealth of experience and resilience. This needs to change.
I proposed concrete ways to build age-inclusive workplaces. Businesses must lead the charge, and we should incentivize them through schemes like a “Gold Standard Certification” for age-friendly employers. Training must also be practical and accessible—not buried under red tape. Instead of generic courses, let’s focus on skills that matter, like gig economy work and caregiving. And most importantly, we need stronger laws to tackle hiring bias head-on. Workplace fairness should not be a nice-to-have—it should be the norm.
Yio Chu Kang is home to many seniors who still have so much to offer. I will continue to push for policies that create real opportunities for them, because work beyond age should be a choice, not a challenge.
