This was confirmed by Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Sleiman Kwidini, during a session in the National Assembly on Wednesday. Kwidini explained that some religious beliefs make it difficult for health workers to vaccinate children. He emphasized the importance of protecting children's rights, stating, “Every child should receive help, regardless of their religious beliefs.” He added that diseases affect everyone, and the government is working to ensure all children benefit from vaccinations. In Zimbabwe, many children from Apostolic sects have not been vaccinated due to their religious beliefs against modern medicine. Parents often seek vaccinations secretly to avoid issues with their church, which is especially concerning during outbreaks of diseases like measles. However, Kwidini noted that some religious groups are becoming more accepting of vaccinations. “Certain religious groups that previously opposed medical treatment are now inviting our Ministry to administer vaccines during their gatherings,” he said. While some new churches still resist, most of the sects that once opposed vaccinations are now cooperating with the government and even registering for maternity services.
