*A unifying force , not a hindrance to our own progress*
*Introduction*
African spirituality and those following it, has long been misunderstood, often misrepresented as mere superstition or a barrier to any known or desired progress across all aspects of life beginning from individual level up to the collective national level. However, this perception is not only misleading but also ignores the depth, wisdom, and unity embedded in traditional African beliefs. True African spirituality is centered on community, family, and national cohesion of all involved, while acknowledging one supreme creator, Mwari Nyakusika/Mwari Mudzimu Mukuru, and honoring the ancestors as a way of strengthening bonds among the families (mhuri) of the living, communities and Dzimbahwe as the entire state.
*Dispelling the Myth of Superstition*
The claim that African spirituality is purely superstitious fails to recognize that all religions have elements of faith and belief that may not be immediately explainable by science. Superstition exists in all societies, including *mainstream* religious practices. For instance, in various global faiths; miracles, exorcisms, and divine interventions are accepted despite lacking empirical proof. Similarly, African spirituality incorporates rituals and ceremonies that are deeply *symbolic* rather than irrational or backward.
Contrary to accusations of holding back Zimbabwe’s progress, African spirituality has historically played a role in resistance, governance, and social cohesion. During the First Chi-Murenga (Liberation Struggle), spiritual leaders such as Nehanda Nyakasikana (Charwe), Chaminuka, Kaguvi etc inspired the fight against colonial oppression, demonstrating the *power* of indigenous belief systems in driving national determination and unity. Today, African spirituality continues to serve as a guiding moral and ethical framework, fostering communal responsibility and social balance.
*The Unifying Role of African Spirituality*
One of the strongest aspects of African spirituality is its emphasis on unity. Unlike divisive doctrines, it demands *harmony* within families, communities, and the nation at large. Ancestral veneration, often misunderstood as worship, is in fact a cultural practice aimed at bringing people together. The ceremonies and rituals performed are not for the dead but for the living — to reinforce bonds, address communal issues, and ensure the well-being of future generations.
For example, traditional ceremonies like the kurova guva (a ceremony to welcome a departed ancestor’s spirit/kudzora mushakabvu) or the rainmaking ceremonies (mukwerera) are communal events where families and entire communities unite correspondingly and accordingly. These gatherings facilitate discussions on social matters, resolve conflicts, and create a shared vision for collective positive prosperity and progress. Through these traditions, values such as respect, honesty, and collective responsibility are reinforced.
*Mwari Nyakusika, Mwari Mudzimu Mukuru: The Supreme Creator*
A common misconception is that African spirituality is polytheistic or lacks a central divine figure. In reality, African traditional beliefs acknowledge one supreme being — Mwari Nyakusika/Mwari Mudzimu Mukuru. Just as various religious traditions have intermediaries like saints or prophets, African spirituality recognizes ancestors Madzitateguru (midzimu) as messengers who bridge the gap between the divine and the living. Their veneration is not worship but a way to maintain a cultural and spiritual link with the past while ensuring guidance for the future, for our children and the next generations.
*_The Role of Spirituality in Dzimbabwe National Progress_*
Far from being an obstacle to development, African spirituality, Tsika namagariro edu, provides a foundation for ethical leadership, social justice, and sustainable development. The values instilled through spiritual traditions — such as respect for elders, communal responsibility, and environmental stewardship — are essential for creating a stable and progressive society. Many African philosophies, such as Ubuntu (I am because we are), originate from these beliefs and offer a framework for inclusive governance and community-driven economic growth.
By understanding and embracing African spirituality, Zimbabweans can foster a sense of identity, pride, and national unity. Recognizing its role in past struggles and present societal cohesion allows for the integration of its values into modern governance, economic development, cultural heritage and education.
*Conclusion*
African spirituality is not an impediment to Zimbabwe’s progress like some mordenist and religions say, but a vital force for unity, moral guidance, and national strength. Misrepresenting it as mere superstition ignores its deep cultural significance and ability to foster community cohesion. Recognizing the role of Mwari Nyakusika, Mwari Mudzimu Mukuru, honoring ancestors as a means of social unity, and upholding African spiritual values can only serve to strengthen, families, communities and the nation. It is time to move beyond misconceptions and embrace African spirituality as a key element of Zimbabwe’s cultural and national identity.
