*Skin Bleaching: A New Pandemic Among African Women—At What Cost?*
50% of African women bleach their skin.
Bleaching creams and injections put you at risk of skin cancer (which is uncommon in Black skin but occurs more frequently in women who bleach), damage to vital organs such as the liver and kidneys, skin irritation and allergies, infections, stretch marks, diabetes, hypertension, burns, rashes, wrinkles, premature aging, birth defects, and delayed wound healing.
In January 2023, Togo reported its first case of squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer) linked to skin bleaching products. Many other cancer cases have been reported across Africa.
As of this writing, melanin is valued at over $400 per gram—far more than gold, which is worth $75 per gram.
*This means a melanated body holds more value than one merely coated in gold.*
