Armyworm Outbreak Hits Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo
An outbreak of the African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta) has been reported in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, affecting pastures and grain crops. According to Roger Price of the Agricultural Research Council and Dr. Godfrey Kgatle of Grain SA, infestations have been spotted in Groblersdal, Carolina, Badplaas, Pretoria North, and Bronkhorstpruit. The pests, carried by winds from Central Africa, primarily feed on grasses but may damage maize. While infestations remain small, livestock farmers must be cautious as affected kikuyu grass releases toxins harmful to cattle. Experts warn that large-scale chemical control may not be cost-effective.
