Facing unemployment, he joined his parents on a communal farm, where he started growing green chilies and later expanded to supplying well-established businesses. In 2023, he participated in a year-long agricultural program with Siyazisiza Trust in KZN, gaining valuable expertise. Teaming up with a fellow graduate facing similar employment challenges, they pursued independence and secured their own leased land. Their farm focuses on crop production, mainly butternut and cabbage, supplying school feeding schemes. Armyworm Outbreak Hits Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo An outbreak of the African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta) has been reported in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, affecting pastures and grain crops. According to Roger Price of the Agricultural Research Council and Dr. Godfrey Kgatle of Grain SA, infestations have been spotted in Groblersdal, Carolina, Badplaas, Pretoria North, and Bronkhorstpruit. The pests, carried by winds from Central Africa, primarily feed on grasses but may damage maize. While infestations remain small, livestock farmers must be cautious as affected kikuyu grass releases toxins harmful to cattle. Experts warn that large-scale chemical control may not be cost-effective.
