Inaugural Africa Twins Summit to Unite Multiple Birth Families Across the Continent
Story by Christine Chiromo
In a groundbreaking initiative to address the unique challenges faced by twins and multiple birth families across Africa, the first-ever Africa Twins Summit is set to take place in Harare from February 20-25, 2025.
Under the theme "Twins of Africa - Twinning against Poverty, Double the Love and Share the Care," the summit aims to bring together an estimated 30,000 delegates from across the continent's 54 member states to celebrate multiple births while tackling health, education, and economic challenges specific to twin families.
"This summit represents a milestone for multiple birth families who often face unique circumstances that aren't always recognized in standard healthcare and social policies," said Tendai and Farai Katonha, the twin founders of the Africa Twins Association (ATA), who initiated the continental organization in August 2022.
The five-day event will feature an ambitious agenda including policy discussions, cultural celebrations, business networking opportunities, and the formal inauguration of the Africa Twins Association Board. Government officials, healthcare professionals, educators, and business leaders are expected to participate alongside multiple birth families.
Day three of the summit, designated as "Africa Twins Day," will serve as the main event, hosting cultural exhibitions showcasing twins in African art, literature, and music at Harare's Glamis Arena. The summit will also include initiatives to create a comprehensive database of twins across Africa.
"Multiple births hold special significance in many African cultures, yet the practical challenges of raising twins or triplets, especially in resource-limited settings, remain underaddressed,"
"By uniting our voices across the continent, we hope to advocate for policies that support multiple birth families while preserving cultural heritage."
The Africa Twins Association, operating under the motto "Leaving no one behind," has committed to making this an annual event rotating through different African nations in coming years. The organization currently maintains offices in Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
For families of twins and other multiple births interested in participating, registration details will be announced through social media campaigns and partner organizations across Africa in the coming months.
