21 February 2025 Ndera FM News Tennis Tournament Brings New Energy to Mashonaland East Story by Nathan Mubwanda Marondera is set to diversify its sporting scene with the launch of the Manjoro Memorial Seniors Tennis Tournament at Watershed College. The event while it honors the legendary Coach Lazarus Manjoro also aims to promote tennis as an alternative to the traditionally dominant sports of soccer and netball. The two-day tournament has attracted seven clubs, including the University of Zimbabwe, Old Hararians, Harare Sports Club, Marondera Tennis Club A and B, Chitungwiza Tennis Club, Manjoro Juniors, and White Rhinos from the army. Raymond Charewa, Secretary-General of the Mashonaland East Tennis Board, said similar competitions are planned for August 2025 at Peterhouse College. "We need to nurture young talent through junior teams in line with their sports calendar," he said. Winners of the tournament will be awarded medals, with the overall champion receiving a floating trophy. This initiative is expected to mark the beginning of a new era for tennis in the region, encouraging greater participation and development in the sport.
