Picking up your cross daily means dieing, dieing to yourself - your will, interests and anything that stands in the way . It may not necessarily be a sin but it's there in your way, you can't follow closer cuz it's there you can't even hear the master speak cuz it's there hindering your growth and intimacy with God . The cross here represents death it means something has to die.
