an-absence-of-unity-is-not-good-for-our-region _On the fast lane to 2030 by Maxwell Haitengeswinyika Teedzai_ *The challenges of an opposition leader in power — easier to tear apart a Nation than to build it up* | Sat Feb 1, 2025 The absence of HE Hakainde Hichilema, the Zambian President from the SADC __ Southern African Development Community Extraordinary Summit to find a peaceful resolution to ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC, Chaired by SADC Summit Chair HE President Dr ED Mnangagwa — the Head of State and Government of the Great Republic of Zimbabwe, Commander-in-Chief of the ZDF - Zimbabwe Defence Forces and First Secretary of the Ruling ZANU PF Revolutionary Party, raises concerns about the challenges opposition leaders face when they transition to power. While in opposition, leaders often gain support by critiquing established authorities, but upon taking office, they may neglect regional collaborations. This decision to skip such dialogues risks isolating the Great Republic of Zambia from discussions that impact all Member Nations. The absence is striking when contrasted with the presence of the Great Republic of Botswana’s HE Duma Gideon Boko, whose participation highlights the value of political engagement and the risks of remaining disengaged. Acknowledging the complexities of leadership is crucial; opposing another leader is easier than the responsibility of guiding a Nation. Leadership demands a focus on building bridges, not tearing them down. The challenges facing our countries require collaboration, unity, and a liberated African mindset—elements essential for navigating the socio-economic landscape. Leaders should use their positions to foster unity with fellow countrymen and African Nations rather than isolating themselves from important discussions. For Zimbabweans, it is important to stop undermining our Nation and confront our challenges with determination and respect. By facing issues collectively, we can ensure that our former adversaries have no foothold against us. United, we can stand firm against detractors and move toward success in our Vision 2030 NDA — National Development Agenda. Working together toward common goals is key in overcoming the obstacles we face. Decisions made in anger by a leader in whatever sphere of influence often lead to stagnation and frustration, hindering our ability to communicate effectively and see the bigger picture. At times the light to lead a Nation might not be visible to many and it is at times crucial to remember that the majority isn't always right; impactful decisions often emerge from those willing to think outside the box and respectfully take bold steps to resolve problems, thereby enhancing our collective capacity and the honoring of our Leadership. Meaningful development cannot occur when we engage in bootlicking conversations that undermine others for our own interests. We must rise above our political differences for the love of our country and its people, allowing ourselves a trial period to assess what works and what doesn’t. Otherwise, we risk becoming polarized and heading down a road to nowhere! Lastly, we must not let our emotions overshadow our decisions, regardless of economic challenges. Genuine solutions arise when we choose peace over destructive criticism, understanding that constructive dialogue is more valuable than mere opposition. We have the power to shape our future through understanding and engagement. Embracing our diversity will forge a path to a united and prosperous future for all. #africanleadership #regionalcollaboration #unityindiversity #dialogueoverviolence #buildingafuturetogether.
