India is not just plurilingual—where people speak different languages—but truly multilingual, where individuals and communities use more than one language. Our education system must nurture this reality. Multilingual education fosters cognitive flexibility, scholastic achievement & social tolerance. This is what three-language formula (TLF) sought to achieve. But its implementation has been lopsided. Non-Hindi states were required to teach Hindi, but Hindi-speaking states bypassed learning a South Indian language by opting for Sanskrit. If the Union govt is serious about TLF and not imposing Hindi, it must not tie central grants to this formula. Instead, it should ensure reciprocity—Hindi-speaking states should also adopt Tamil or another modern Indian language as the third language.
