๐ต Lactose is a sugar found in the milk of mammals.
๐ต It is broken down into simple sugars, Glucose & Galactose, by a digestive enzyme called Lactase.
๐ต In many people, the body stops producing this enzyme after childhood. Originally, it did for everyone, but due to a genetic mutation, some people continue to produce lactase after childhood.
๐ต Lactose Intolerance is not the same as Milk Sensitivity. Sensitivity is towards the protein (Casein) present in milk, not Lactose.
๐ต This is why switching from A1 to A2 milk wonโt help with Lactose Intolerance.
๐ต Milk sensitivity symptoms can show up in different parts of the body, but Lactose Intolerance is primarily a Gut issue.
๐ต Typical signs of Lactose Intolerance include:
โ
Bloating
โ
Stomach Cramps
โ
Diarrhea
โ
Nausea
โ
Noises in the stomach
after consuming high-lactose dairy products.
๐ต Many people donโt have full-blown Lactose Intolerance but Lactose Malabsorption.
๐ต Lactose Malabsorption occurs when the body doesnโt produce enough lactase to handle dietary lactose.
๐ต In both cases, Lactose travels to the large intestine without being broken down, where gut bacteria ferment it, producing gas and gut distress.
๐ต It is estimated that 60% of the people have Lactose Intolerance (including malabsorption).
๐ต The solution to Lactose Intolerance is to limit/avoid high-lactose foods.
๐ต Another option is to use a Lactase supplement before consuming dairy.
๐ต Lactose Intolerance exists on a spectrum, from severe cases to mild digestive discomfort, so total elimination of dairy may not be necessary for everyone.
๐ต Whey Isolate is much better than Whey Concentrate if you are Lactose Intolerant.
