U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States voted against the UN resolution condemning Russia for its war of aggression in Ukraine because it was "antagonistic" and contradicted efforts aimed at negotiating an end to the war.
According to the U.S., if the UN wants to be useful in the 21st century, it should return to its core mission of "preventing and ending wars and conflicts," Rubio said.
"President Trump wants to end this war. He believes that too many people have died and wants to put an end to it. Frankly, we decided that it was not worth creating something antagonistic at the UN against one of the parties. We are trying to bring these guys to the negotiating table," the U.S. Secretary of State stated.
