May be β-hemolytic. ✔ *MacConkey*: Colorless (Lac -). ✔ *CLED*: Blue-gray (controls swarming). ✔ *XLD*: Yellow/white, may have black center (H₂S+). 🧪 *Key Biochemical Tests:* ✔ *Urease*: Strong (+). ✔ *Phenylalanine Deaminase:* (+). ✔ *Indole:* P. mirabilis (-), P. vulgaris (+). ✔ *H₂S Production:* (+). ⚠️ *Rising Resistance!* Increasing β-lactamase-producing Proteus spp., including carbapenemase genes (blaOXA-48, blaNDM, blaKPC). ✔ *AST* is Critical! Always test for cephalosporin resistance & ESBLs.
