*The Suspended Ogun Monarch Must Go to Jail to Serve as Deterrent to Others*
The decision by the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun in Ogun State to suspend and strip Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, of his royal title and regalia, pending the determination of his culpability or otherwise in the allegation of assault against a 73-year-old chief, Areola Abraham, is a commendable one. In a two-minute video clip, Mr. Ogunjobi was seen cursing and assaulting Chief Arinola Abraham, who was kneeling on the road, while Ogunjobi accused him of conspiracy.
The police have swiftly invited Ogunjobi for interrogation. Nonetheless, the police, whom Ogunjobi boasted about having in his pocket, have yet to disclose details of their interaction with the suspended monarch. As a former police officer, Ogunjobi had threatened in a video to kill Abraham without facing consequences, claiming to have the Nigeria police at his disposal. The onus is now on the police to prove the veracity of Ogunjobi's claims through their actions in this case. Anything short of justice for Abraham will be perceived as a validation of Ogunjobi's boasts.
By now, it is anticipated that Ogunjobi, like any other citizen, should be in court, explaining to the Magistrate why he should not be jailed for offenses including physical assault, dehumanization, defamation of the police, and other charges. He deserves it. His argument in the video that Abraham and others conspired against him was insufficient to justify his actions. Conspiracy, even when harmless, remains a common aspect of palace politics which nobody can dispute.
Akoni Oodua Ayeniromo... It is essential for modern Yoruba monarchs to undergo training sessions to improve their conduct as kings. The obligatory stay in "ipebi" where they are tutored on royal etiquette appears to have failed. Furthermore, it is unclear whether this tradition is still practiced. Sources indicate that an Oba-elect, Akeem Owoade, the new Alaafin of Oyo, allegedly abandoned his mandatory seclusion in Ipebi for Canada, citing unspecified reasons. The majority of them are causing embarrassment to the Yoruba people and the throne they occupy, which is becoming increasingly intolerable. In contrast to their ancestors' reigns, recent incidents have involved Obas engaging in open physical altercations, accusations of theft, police detention, and physical assaults by their subjects.
It is possible that due to these factors, some individuals propose that the “Alaale”, the ancestors of the Yorubas, may be in a state of slumber, necessitating their awakening to prevent the complete erosion of our cultural identity by these dollar-influenced diasporas Kabiyesi.
