SPORTS MINISTER NKANDU SHOULDN'T PRETEND HE HAS CAPACITY TO INTERFERE IN FAZ ELECTIONS Good evening. By Friday, Zambians will know who has qualified to stand for Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President, and council members. The persons who qualify to stand for FAZ President, in particular, will have done so by meeting the requirements of the FAZ Constitution, not because they have been favoured by Minister of Sports and Art, Elvis Nkandu, or even Outgoing Dictator Hakainde Hichilema. In fact, while Nkandu has been posturing about government not interferring in these FAZ elections, he knows that as things stand currently, he has no capacity to do so. He was saying so just to make his government look good. The way things are now, the system for registration of candidates, and other key aspects, are connected to FIFA, online. Hence, it is even much safer for candidates to file in their papers online than submitting them physically. Nkandu knows that any tampering to this process will be noted easily by a simple audit trail by FIFA, and will lead to ghastly sanctions on Zambia by the world football governing body. It is this heightened monitoring by FIFA of the qualification process for candidates, which has made government interference in this process difficult. They can only spend money on their preferred candidate after qualification. Because of these current arrangements and the provisions of the FAZ Constitution, it is also silly to suggest that Current President of FAZ, Andrew Kamanga can block anyone from challenging him, or standing for member of the FAZ Council. Those who are already falling out, and those whose ambitions will collapse on Friday, have their fate decided by the FAZ amended Constitution. Apart from limiting terms of a FAZ President to three, decentralised football, and having committee members elected through provinces, the new FAZ Constitution, in line with FIFA guidelines, limits Council delegates to not more than 80. The key qualification for one to stand for election to the FAZ executive committee, and council, one has to have served in CLUB administration for five (5) years, and three of these five years should be immediately before the elections. Note that three years is three years, not two years and eleven months. Note that the Constitution says Club administration, not football administration. Which begs the question why Adrian Kashala is running around saying he qualifies to stand. CAN'T HE READ? Even in the case of the reputed "people's choice", Keith Mweemba of Muza Football Club, it is not a matter of what the people want but what the FAZ Constitution provides. Does he qualify? If he does, nobody can block him. So let Kashala leave the field for those who actually qualify to stand for FAZ President or Committee members. Good luck to you all.
