TONSE ALLIANCE SHOULD IGNORE TWO-BIT GOVERNANCE EXPERT CHISEBE'S ATTEMPT TO DISTRACT THEM
We have nothing against self-proclaimed Governance Expert Noel Chisebe, even with his loud colour combination of brown suit, purple shirt, blood-red tie and brown tan shoes.
But we think he is trying to sow seeds of distraction in the minds of members of the Tonse Alliance, with regard to the ultimate goal of this group's activities.
According to Noel Chisebe, quoted widely on radio news and online platforms, Tonse Alliance should leverage its victory in the Petauke Central parliamentary by-election to "create momentum and potential to influence policy when parliament resumes sitting next week".
If Mr Chisebe was a real governance expert, he would know a few things about the goal of the Tonse Alliance, and also about their views, and those of the Zambian people, on the State of this current parliament, and its failure to live up to expectation.
Mr Chisebe, the Tonse Alliance, and a growing number of Zambians have long given up on getting credible policy outcomes from this parliament because of how its business has been conducted in the last four years.
Speaker Nellie Mutti, and her other presiding officers are so embarrassingly partisan that the public no longer pays serious attention to the business of this House.
Inside parliament itself, members of opposition are discriminated against, have their debates curtailed routines, and suffer suspensions over frivolous procedural infringements. They take part in debates only to place their views on record, not to contribute to helpful policy outcomes.
Generally, it has been concluded by many that the conduct of business in this parliament is largely a sham, and has failed to perform its oversight role over the work of thr Executive. This parliament does the bidding of the Executive. In some instances, the Speaker has been known to have unashamedly answered questions on behalf of the Executive, just to kill opposition debate.
Tonse Alliance is aware of all these things, and the conclusion many Zambians have reached. This parliament, like the other two arms of government, is tainted beyond repair.
This government has failed in virtually every area. In the area of interest to Mr Chisebe, governance, the government is now simply bracing itself for the verdict of the United Nations regarding violation of the rights of citizens, going by the "stark" adverse findings of the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression and opinion Irene Khan last month.
The failure of its economic management is felt in the hungry stomachs and other stark realities of rhe current harsh economic conditions, which are worse than those in 2021.
The crass tribalism being practiced in appointments to government, state commissions, paraststals and police, defence and security wings, has become so blatant that even some supporters of Outgoing Dictator Hakainde Hichilema are getting embarrassed.
Therefore, for Mr Chisebe to suggest that the Tonse Alliance should leverage its victory in the Petauke Central Constituency by-election to go to parliament and influence policy is misguided.
Correcting the current rot in government goes deeper than just influencing policy. Good policy in the hands of a bad government will still amount to nothing. Parliament is part of this rot.
The only solution to Zambia's current political dictatorship and economic malaise is to shovel out this failed government. The Tonse Alliance is one of the progressive political formations organising to bring about this solution.
Therefore, we cannot have self-styled governance experts trying to distract them from this noble goal.
Zambians are not calling for change of policy. They are calling for change of government in 2026.
Any self respecting governance expert should know that, Mr Chisebe.
