PANIC POLITICAL MOTIVATIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR PRINTING NEW CURRENCY The most distinguishing characteristic of the Outgoing Dictator Hakainde Hichilema's government has been its crass dishonesty. The lies told by this man and some senior leaders in his team have been amply exposed and documented and, therefore, will not be listed in this morning's article. But yesterday this dishonesty reached its peak with announcement of introduction of a new currency by March 3, 2025. Forget the nice technical things spewed out by the Bank of Zambia in its announcement. That statement is just cover for real motive. The real motive is political. Since getting into government in 2021, the United Party for National Development (UPND) has laboured under the illusion that leaders of the Patriotic Front (PF) left office with containers of cash which have remained hidden. Now that the 2026 elections are upon us, the currency change should deal a mortal blow to the PF who will now have difficulties exchanging their supposed loot with new currency. That is the real political motivation for this change of currency. It is all about fixing Edgar Lungu and his crew. As one colleague observed last night: "The UPND want to pretend that they have finished off Edgar Lungu. But then why is he in their every conversation and political statements and actions?". It is a sign that his political shadow still looms large, and causes the UPND continuous panic as elections approach, and economic difficulties bring more complaints from citizens. On this currency issue, the public should note this fact. Members of the public have been complaining about the soiled state of kwacha notes and have been asking the Bank of Zambia to replace the soiled notes. There has been no complaint regarding kwacha denominations. But instead the government has changed the currency. The question is why? Apart from those who have gained as a group from the printing contract, the real motive is the fixing of the former President and other former leaders Outgoing Dictator Hichilema believes stashed loads of cash after their defeat. Unexpected confirmation of the primitive political motivations for this action came early last night, and we publish it below, for the public to appreciate the points the Zambian Whistleblower has made over this matter. One government supporter thought he was doing them a favour. Instead he has confirmed the underlying motive for this very inconvenient currency change. Enjoy this article in context, and good day: How the Bank of Zambia’s Policies Trapped Hidden Cash—And Why a New Currency Could Be the Final Blow By Cosmas Sichilongo It is no secret that large sums of money were stolen from the Bank of Zambia before the change of government in 2021. However, what many may not realize is that the Bank of Zambia (BoZ) knew exactly how much Kwacha was taken out of circulation. To counter the effects of this looting and prevent a financial crisis, they introduced strict fiscal policies designed to stabilize the economy and control inflation. One of the key measures introduced was a cap on foreign currency purchases. The BoZ limited the amount of U.S. dollars that could be bought per day to just $1,000 per person. This policy made it difficult for those holding large amounts of illicit Kwacha to exchange it for dollars. If they had successfully done so, Zambia would have experienced hyperinflation, as too much Kwacha would have flooded the economy. Additionally, the central bank tightened monetary policy by increasing the statutory reserve ratio for commercial banks, effectively reducing the amount of money in circulation. They also adjusted the policy rate to control liquidity and curb inflationary pressures. These measures ensured that anyone attempting to reintroduce stolen money into the system would have a hard time doing so without raising red flags. Now, those who hoarded stolen Kwacha face a dilemma—take their bags of money to the bank and risk exposure, or hold onto it and watch its value diminish due to inflation. *The Introduction of a New Currency: The Final Nail in the Coffin* Recently, news has emerged that the Zambian government is considering introducing a new currency. If this policy is implemented, it could be a masterstroke in economic management. A currency change would make it mandatory for all money—both clean and illicit—to be exchanged for the new notes through official banking channels. This means those holding stolen or undeclared cash will either have to explain its source or lose it entirely. Such a move would bring multiple benefits to the country. First, it would strengthen the formal financial system by increasing deposit levels in banks, allowing for better economic planning and investment. Second, it would reduce corruption by exposing those who accumulated wealth through illegal means. Finally, it would stabilize the Kwacha by ensuring that only legitimate money circulates within the economy. For those who looted public funds and hid bags of cash, time is running out. Will they be brave enough to bring their hidden wealth into the formal system, or will they watch it become worthless overnight? One thing is certain—this policy, if implemented, will be good for Zambia’s economy and a victory for financial accountability.
