OPPOSITION PARTIES MUST TAKE SERIOUSLY THE REVELATION OF STATE HOUSE MANIPULATION OF CENSUS RESULTS
If Zambia's opposition political parties want to contest the 2026 elections on a level playing field, they should take serious and practical interest in the revelation by Dr Choolwe Beyani of meetings they have been having at State House to manipulate results of the population census to aid their party agenda.
The opposition should quickly scramble a team together and get to the bottom of what is going on, which for Dr Choolwe Beyani, Chairman of the Civil Service Commission to become so incensed as to break protocol and attack the team from the Zambia Statistical Agency (ZAMSTS), led by the eminently qualified former head of the same agency, Dr Oliver Chinganya, because of only 15 wards in Southeen Peovince, and his own misinformed position?
Dr Chinganya, thank God, did put boisterous Beyani in his place. But thankfully, by then Dr Beyani had already let the cat out of the bag.
The exchange between these two technocrats has raised significant questions to which the opposition should demand answers:
1. Why would the President be meeting Dr Choolwe Beyani and ZAMSTATS officials over the census results? For what purpose were these meetings held ?
2. Which 15 wards was the President so interested in that Dr Beyani said he would not be happy with the record by ZAMSTATS?
3. Which voter's registration was Dr Beyani referring to, since the Electoral Commission of Zambia(ECZ) had just released its new register?
4. Are the discrepancies between the census findings and the number of registered voters only in Southern Province? If not, why should the Republican President be unhappy only about wards in Southern Province?
4. How is it that it was Dr Beyani who was left to threaten ZAMSTATS with the President's"unhappiness" over the discrepancies in 15 wards in Southern Province?
5. If the President is working hard to influence the census data, how many other issues, such as judicial decisions, Registrar of Societies, and business contracts, are being dealt with in similar manner?
There are many more questions which the opposition should pursue. The Zambian Whistleblower had for a long time been alerting them to the nefarious intents of the ruling party and the government in the manner continuous registration was being conducted, and which areas. What Dr Choolwe Beyani had exposed, inadvertently, confirms those earlier reports.
Now it is up to the opposition to forcefully demand answers. Otherwise, the 2026 elections will be on very uneven playing field because the United Party for National Development (UPND) will have succeeded in its programme of pre-election rigging.
