Dear Wakwale,
It has been a rollercoaster since we started the youth initiative. There have been many appeals to expand to other areas like Tiwi, Ngombeni, and Likoni. The initiative is progressing well, but here are a few key lessons for today:
1. We must carry everyone along. I am glad that some women have started their own local initiatives to engage with the youth within their reach. Let every able-bodied Kwalean take this as their responsibility. Act locally. Disrupt and divert locally. Stay the course.
2. This problem took years to entrench itself, and it will take years along with significant effort to end or manage it. Minor setbacks should not undermine the broader objectives.
3. I have now learned that women are the key to solving this problem. Women love and fear for their children. Men, in turn, fear and love their women. Wananung’unika huko kando. Neighbours fear their neighbours. If we can unbundle the fear and love conundrum, we can solve the problem more sustainably.
4. Youth are also capable of contributing to the solution if supported, encouraged, and empowered. Binti, speaking in the message below, was my star of the week. As a sister addressing her brothers, she delivered a clear and unambiguous message.
5. Woza woza... iko sawa.
