Zimbabwean students looking at furthering their education abroad have been warned to avoid the Alabuga Start Programme being offered in Russia. Protokol, a Russian investigative media organisation alleged that students recruited under the programme end up working under exploitative conditions in military factories in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, where they live under curfew, guarded dormitories and face racial and gender discrimination. The media outlet says the conditions amount to human trafficking. The warning follows a visit by an Alabuga delegation to Zimbabwe recently. The Russian Embassy in Zimbabwe however, professed ignorance over the programme.
