Zimbabwe Intensifies Fight Against AMR
_…Multi-faceted Funding Key to Success of NAP_

Zimbabwe has launched a robust initiative to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing global health threat. The country requires approximately US$45 million to effectively implement AMR interventions over the next four years. This announcement was made during the launch of the National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance in Zimbabwe (NAP 2.0).
The Fleming Fund has pledged an additional US$3.5 million to address gaps in surveillance and improve data-driven policymaking. Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora emphasized the urgency of addressing AMR, citing the alarming statistic that over 15,800 Zimbabweans died from AMR-related complications in 2019.
“If we don’t act now, the cost will be devastating – not just in lives lost, but in livelihoods destroyed, families torn apart, and opportunities missed. But I believe in the resilience of our people and our ability to rise to any challenge,” Dr. Mombeshora said.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), AMR could claim 10 million lives annually by 2050, with a cumulative global cost of US$100 trillion. The WHO’s Zimbabwe Medical Officer, Dr. Pius Essandoh warned that the rise in drug-resistant infections was alarming and required immediate attention.
“As we launch the Zimbabwe One Health Second Edition of the AMR National Action Plan, we recognize the urgent need to address this global crisis that is increasingly threatening health systems, food security, and our future,” Dr. Essandoh said.……Full story on www.masvingomirror.com
