*DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS AND PEACE STUDIES MAKES ACADEMIC HISTORY WITH MAIDEN STUDENTS' PROJECT SHOW* In a groundbreaking achievement, the Department of Religious and Peace Studies, Faculty of Arts, Lagos State University has made academic history by hosting its inaugural student project show. This event highlighted the innovative research and creativity of students focusing on Islam and environmental sustainability. The event took place on Wednesday, 19th February 2025, at the Hallow Chamber, Students' Arcade, LASU main campus, Ojo, Lagos and well attended by esteemed personalities, faculty members, and students of the university. The Programme Coordinator, Dr Mustapha Adebayo Bello, in his welcome address, expressed profound gratitude to the University Management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, for approving the REP 211 (Islam and the Environment) Project Show. He remarked, "The fight between Environmental Abuse and Environmental Sustainability is on, as depicted in one of our graphics, and it is a battle for the collective survival of all of us. Our studies suggest that if we can persuade those who pollute our world to restrain their actions, we can transform the earth into a better, safer, and more secure place for everyone." Dr Bello urged government establishments and religious authorities to collaborate in addressing environmental challenges. The event featured a keynote address by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Honourable Tokunbo Phillip Wahab, delivered by his representative, the Deputy Director, Sanitation Service Department, Mrs Bamigbade Sesi Ebunola. He emphasised the need for collective action, stating, "It is on us to fight causes mitigating against environmental pollution. We all need to embrace change to save our planet." He reiterated the state government's commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and outlined actionable plans for environmental defence. The Commissioner highlighted the teachings of Islam regarding environmental sustainability, referencing concepts such as Amanah (Trusteeship), Mizan (Balanced Equilibrium), and 'Adl (Justice). He commended LASU for introducing a course like "Islam and the Environment" and praised the creativity displayed by students through posters, poetry, and debates, encouraging ongoing collaboration between religious authorities and academia in combating environmental abuse. The Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Ayodele, represented by Professor Ahmed Adesanya, Head of the Department of African Languages and Linguistics, delivered a goodwill message, describing the initiative as a "welcome development." He expressed hope for more events of this nature in the future, fostering a culture of creative innovation. Head of the Department of Peace and Religious Studies, Dr Selome, emphasised that the primary objective of the programme was to showcase students' creativity and innovative skills in the context of Islam and environmental sustainability. He extended heartfelt thanks to all attendees, particularly the Honourable Commissioner and his representative, for their contributions to the success of the event. The debate and poetry sessions, moderated by Dr Saheed Timehin and Ms Rasheedat Ajakaiye, a first-class English alumnus of LASU, featured intense competition among four groups, each representing an environmental element: Land, Water, Air, and the Animal & Plant Kingdom. The Plant and Animal Kingdom group emerged victorious, followed by the Water group in second place, the Air group in third, and the Land group in fourth. With over 300 participating students, the REP 211 (Islam and the Environment) Project Show received widespread acclaim. Attendees were impressed by the students' displays of creativity and knowledge, transforming the Hallowed Chamber into an engaging exhibition center. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and the presentation of medals and trophy by the Principal Guest of Honour, Alhaji Barrister Dhikrullah Kunle Hassan. We are LASU, We are the Greatest!
