*NIGERIAN DEFENCE ACADEMY AND UNICEF STRENGTHEN COMMITMENT TO PROTECT CHILDREN IN ARMED CONFLICT* The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and UNICEF hosted a pivotal conference on the Handover Protocol for children affected by armed conflict in Nigeria. The event brought together key stakeholders, including UNICEF representatives, senior military officers, and cadets from the NDA's 72 Regular Course. Mr. Ibrahim Sesay, Chief Child Protection at UNICEF Abuja, commended the Nigerian military for its commitment to international humanitarian laws, particularly in preventing child soldier recruitment. Nigeria has made significant strides in implementing the Handover Protocols, established in September 2022, which have expedited the humane treatment of children in conflict zones.¹ Since 2016, Nigeria has facilitated the release and reintegration of 3,271 children and 691 women with children from military detention. An additional 896 children and 460 women with children have been assisted following the signing of the 2022 Protocol. Major General John Ochai, Commandant of the NDA, emphasized the need for continual improvement in civilian handling, especially concerning children's rights in warfare. The conference also announced the integration of child protection training into the NDA curriculum, aiming to equip officers with essential knowledge on child protection and rights in conflict settings. The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthen collaboration between the Nigerian military and UNICEF, prioritizing the full implementation of the Handover Protocol and enhancement of child protection training.
