This does not mean gold, silver or precious stones, nor influence, power or friendships in high places. Rather, to be truly rich is to have your life sheltered from the wrath of God, which comes upon the world because of sin. Jesus Christ is the only one who can redeem your life. By contrast, the genuine poor is not one who has nothing to eat, or drink, or place to sleep, but is one who is ignorant of his own destiny. One whom the riches, comforts, pleasures and ambitions of this world keep blind and deaf to the threat of eternal death.
