Benefits of Saying السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ (As-Salamu Alaikum) The Islamic greeting "السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ" (As-Salamu Alaikum) means "Peace be upon you" and carries several spiritual, social, and psychological benefits. --- 1. A Sunnah and Act of Worship The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) encouraged spreading Salam: “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you something that, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread Salam among yourselves.” (Sahih Muslim, 54) --- 2. Brings Barakah (Blessings) and Mercy The full greeting "السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ" means: "May peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you." This is a direct supplication for Allah’s peace and mercy upon others. --- 3. A Way to Earn Rewards Saying "السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ" earns 10 rewards Saying "وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ" earns 20 rewards Saying "وَبَرَكَاتُهُ" earns 30 rewards (Sunan Abu Dawood, 5195) --- 4. Spreads Love and Unity Strengthens brotherhood in Islam and removes hatred. Promotes kindness and good relations. --- 5. Protection from Arrogance Greeting first shows humility and sincerity. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best of the people in the sight of Allah is the one who initiates the greeting.” (Abu Dawood, 5197) --- 6. Increases Security and Peace in Society Encourages peace and harmony in communities. Reduces hostility and misunderstandings. --- Correct Response to Salam وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ (Wa Alaikum As-Salam) → "And peace be upon you too." وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ (Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh) → "And Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you too." --- Conclusion Saying "As-Salamu Alaikum" is more than a greeting; it’s an act of worship, a supplication, and a way to build love and peace in society. So, spreading Salam is a simple but powerful way to earn Allah’s rewards and bring people closer together.
