The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) increased coconut imports by 30% last month to address shortages, said Director-General Abdul Rashid Bahri. A total of 640,000 coconuts were imported from Indonesia, Sabah, and Sarawak. He attributed the shortage to seasonal factors and expanded sourcing to Palekbang, Sabah, and Sarawak.
Abdul Rashid denied claims of coconut smuggling to Thailand, stating that detained suppliers had valid licences. Fama found no clear evidence of illegal exports but noted some lacked proper signage. He said Fama would not limit supplier licences, as more traders would help maintain a stable supply and prevent market monopolisation.
