At work, some medical practitioners came for a blood donation sensitization exercise.
After their session, they asked if anyone would be willing to donate later. A good number of us, including me, indicated interest. But my colleague and close friend in the office shook his head violently and said, “I can never donate blood.”
They asked why, and he replied, “My church condemns it. It’s against my faith.”
One of the health workers asked, “So if your wife is in the hospital and needs blood, what would you do?”
Without hesitation, he said, “Even if my mother is dying and needs blood, I won’t donate.”
Ah! I screamed. “So wait, if me—your guy—needs blood nko? Wetin you go do?”
He laughed and said, “You funny o. If I no give my mama and my wife, na you I go give? Guy, God’s will must be done. If you’re meant to kpai, you go kpai.”
We all laughed, but deep down, I was disturbed with his level of reasoning
That same evening, on our way home, he didn’t look carefully enough & ran across the expressway. A car hit him hard & sent him flying
Fortunately for us, the driver stopped and we rushed him to the hospital. After stabilizing him, the doctor said, “He needs blood immediately.”
I grabbed his phone and called his wife. She screamed and started coming. When she arrived, they tested her blood. No match.
She called his parents. They said she dare not give their son blood as their church forbids blood transfusion. She should Just pray and they’re coming with their prayer warriors.”
The doctor sighed and turned to her. “Madam, if you don’t find his blood type now, you’ll become a widow.”
I didn’t hesitate because I know my blood type. O-negative—universal donor. “Don’t worry. You won’t become a widow.” Turning to the doctor, “I’ll donate. Just tell me where to go.”
As they prepped me for the donation, my colleague regained consciousness. When the doctor explained the situation, he weakly protested.
“I don’t want his blood,” he muttered. “This one that smokes and drinks, please doctor, don’t give me any blood, it’s against my belief.”
The doctor said . “Sir, you will die.”
He said If it’s God’s will, then he’s ready.” Then he blacked out again. At this point the man that hit him with other Good Samaritans that followed behind left us
His wife fell to her knees, crying. “Doctor, please! I’m his next of kin. He’s not thinking straight. Do it!”
The doctor wasted no time.
She turned to me, still kneeling, pleading for my forgiveness. I told her not to worry that he’s my friend, and I’m used to his bad mouth.”
I went to the lab, underwent all the tests, donated my blood, and even paid for the transfusion fees.
As soon as the transfusion started, his parents and their prayer warriors arrived.
The moment they saw the blood entering his body, they screamed in horror. They started screaming and almost attacked me and his wife. Security had to kick them out.
Weeks later, he was discharged. Alive and well.
But the moment he got home, the first thing he did was throw his wife out of the house.
She called me in tears to report him and ask me to beg him. In fact, she had just found out that another woman had moved in and was taking care of him already.
One week later, he resumed work. The moment he stepped into the office, he attacked me.
Security had to separate us. He was shouting, “Who asked you to give me your blood?! Your dirty, useless, smoker and drunkard blood! Why?!”
He sounded like a ma/dman.
HR wasted no time—they placed him on indefinite suspension.
But my own is… lawyers in the house, please, how can I get back my two pints of blood? Is it possible to collect it back?
Please advise me.
The End
