*Adopting a Norm Within a Non-Muslim Society vs. Imitating Non-Muslims* Q: "Clarification on Celebrating Birthdays In the Fatwa regarding birthdays (https://daruliftaa.us/fatwa/332/) it is mentioned that: "Therefore, celebrating birthdays is permissible, provided they are free from religious significance, the intention to imitate non-Muslims..." It is also mentioned (https://daruliftaa.us/fatwa/414/): "Additionally, birthdays are common within the Muslim community, as it is the norm in the society around them." I wanted to know if celebrating a birthday with the intention to imitate non-Muslims is different from celebrating a birthday due to following the norm of a society (which happens to be a non-Muslim society). Or, in other words, is celebrating a birthday due to the fact that everyone else is doing it the same as celebrating a birthday to imitate non-Muslims? If they are effectively different, then how so? And if they are not, then what are some practical ways a person can celebrate their birthday in a ḥalāl way?” https://daruliftaa.us/fatwa/460/ --- _Visit DarulIftaa.us to ask questions, search for answers, and add favorites to your profile._ _*Remember to turn on notifications on the top right of the screen.*_
