The high prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in the Horn of Africa reflects deep-rooted gender inequality, social subjugation of women, and poor governance.
In Somalia, 98% of girls undergo FGM/C, while 88% of Sudanese girls are subjected to the same practice. In Ethiopia, the national FGM/C rate stands at 65%.
FGM/C has nothing to do faith or religion and predates both Islam and Christianity. It is a harmful practice designed to reinforce women's subordination within a shame and honor framework.
On this International Day for the Elimination of FGM/C, we urge governments across Africa, the Horn, and Eastern Africa, along with civil society in all its forms, to come together in the fight against this harmful practice. We also continue to push for the implementation of strong policies and laws to ensure the complete eradication of FGM/C.
