In one of his many works, ibn Taymiyah wrote: [ وليست التوبة من فعل السيئات فقط كما يظن كثير من الجهّال ،لا يتصورون التوبة إلا عما يفعله العبد من القبائح كالفواحش والمظالم! بل التوبة من ترك الحسنات المأمور بها أهم من التوبة من فعل السيئات المنهي عنه] Repentance is not only for committing sins, as many ignorant people think. They imagine that repentance is only needed if a person commits some horrible act like sexual immorality or wronging others. In reality, repentance for having not performed the good deeds that you were commanded to do is even more important than repentance for having done sins which you were forbidden from doing.
