Fatwas on Ramaḍān | Ramadan 1446 His Eminence Shaykh ‘Abdul-Azeez bin ‘Abd-Allāh Ash-Shaykh Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars What is your advice on making the most of Ramaḍān? What are the best deeds in this blessed month? A Muslim in this month basks in the blessings and favours of Allāh, Exalted be He. It is a season of goodness and blessings, a sacred time that Allāh, the Almighty the Majestic, has ordained as a means of elevating ranks and expiating sins and misdeeds. In this month, the believer is immersed in Allāh’s immense grace and boundless mercy. Thus, you find the Muslim invigorated, fasting his days, standing in prayer by night, engaging in righteous deeds, seeking charity, extending kindness and mercy, and offering goodness. He remains mindful of Allāh, the Most High in both private and public, safeguarding his fast from anything that may taint or diminish it, such as backbiting and gossip. False speech and deceitful actions must also be abandoned, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not renounce false speech and acting upon it, Allāh has no need for him to renounce his food and drink.” (Reported by al-Bukhāri) A Muslim must recognise that these are noble and fleeting days, limited to only twenty-nine or thirty. He should seize the opportunity of his existence in this life and the privilege of this sacred month by drawing closer to Allāh, through that which pleases Him. Fasting during the day, which is the fourth pillar of Islām. Praying at night (Qiyām ul-Layl), a virtuous and highly encouraged act. Supplicating, seeking forgiveness, giving in charity, performing good deeds, and striving for nearness to Allāh, Exalted be He through that which earns His pleasure. Upholding the noble manners of Islām, such as lowering the gaze, restraining harm, protecting the ears from falsehood, and guarding the tongue against obscenity and indecency. When a fasting person adorns himself with the character of Islām in this month, further embellishing it with lofty virtues and noble conduct, then, by Allah’s will, his fast will atone for his sins.  The Prophet ﷺ said: “The five daily prayers, one Jumu'ah to the next, and one Ramadan to the next, are expiations for what is committed between them, so long as major sins are avoided.” (Sahih Muslim) Prepared by the General Administration for Fatwas in collaboration with the Public Relations Department at the General Presidency for Scholarly Research and Iftā’a.
