FIRE SERVICE ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR RELEASE OF FIRE RESPONSE INVESTIGATION REPORT
Statement:
The Fire Service Association, Second Division (The Association) acknowledges the investigation launched by the Minister of National Security, as directed by the Prime Minister, into the fire response that tragically claimed the lives of MP Lisa Morris-Julian and her two children..
The Minister has stated that the report was received on or around January 15, 2025, yet the findings have not been made public.
Given that this investigation was initiated due to "public disquiet", the Association calls on the Minister to release the full contents of the report immediately. Transparency is critical in addressing the serious issues surrounding emergency response and public safety.
One must question if the Minister's reluctance to disclose the findings suggests that the report would confirm what we have long highlighted, that the chronic underfunding of the Fire Service
has severely impacted response times and overall effectiveness. At the time of release of this document, 5 of 11 stations in the North are without fire tenders, Tobago, is without any SCBA sets
whatsoever, there is inadequate PPE to protect officers, unnecessary delays in reimbursement for medical claims and hundreds of vacancies in the organization.
Officers continue to perform their duties with dedication despite limited resources, and it is unacceptable for them to be scapegoated for systemic failures beyond their control.
The people of Trinidad and Tobago deserve answers. The Association remains committed to advocating for improved working conditions for fire officers and ensuring the highest level of public safety. We urge the government to act with urgency in addressing the longstanding.
Keone J. Guy
President, Fire Service Association (Second Division)
