I was accompanied by Dr. Chandralall Soonkram, Public Health Consultant, and Mr. Vakil Rajcoomar, both of whom are committed to tackling diabetes as a public health priority.I welcomed the initiative to bring together all key stakeholders in developing and implementing a National Strategy for Diabetes Remission, with a strong focus on evidence-based lifestyle interventions, such as fasting, to support disease prevention and management.Additionally, we addressed the rising prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes among adolescents, the importance of early risk identification, and the need for comprehensive training programs for healthcare professionals. A key point of discussion was the necessity of recognizing diabetes not just as a medical condition, but as a major public health challenge requiring coordinated, multidisciplinary action. I have committed to developing a strategic roadmap with recommendations for early prevention and long-term health improvements, ensuring a healthier future for the people of Mauritius.
