Editorial 2025 Presidentials: Bamileke issue, another time bomb! Unlike the indigenes of the North West and South West Regions, who are a "people," as described by the African Commission for Peoples and Human Rights, the Bamilekes of the West Region are a clan, and like their Anglophone cousins, have a problem in the country. The "Bamileke issue", as some call it, though to some extent identical to that of the Anglophones, is different in that while the people of the North West and South West Regions speak several dialects, diverse cultures and customs, those of the Bamilekes communicate in one with slightly different pronunciations. That unity in their mothers’ tongue and customs make them more united than the Anglophones and in a country that "where a politician comes from rather than his manifestoes", is often the determinant factor in elections.
