I was working on a proof using analytical geometry taught by Dr. George Thomas (also called Dr. T). I wasnโ€™t very clear on the concept; so I went to my TAs and had them explain it till I fully grasped it so I could tackle the proof.. Just when I thought I was making good progress: I got really stuckโ€ฆ I also had a ton of other homework from the last two days from other courses, and felt like maybe I should stop this and try those. But then, at our office hours time (homework sessions) our professor Dr. T came to look around and saw my work. He just drew two more points in my diagram; and that just sparked a world of new ideas. With renewed enthusiasm towards the problem, I started working on it yet again, with a grin. He came back at the end of the office hours; and saw me still working on that problem. I still remember his exact words โ€“ โ€œYouโ€™re gonna make a great mathematician one day, and hereโ€™s why. You keep working at a problem, no matter how difficult; and never give up until you solve it: and that is something really amazing! Youโ€™ll go a long wayโ€. My heart swelled with pride. An esteemed mathematician has taught me and told me that I will go a long way. These kinds of teachers; who are amongst the best in their field, appreciate you for your efforts and are happy to see you struggle is a rare thing for young students like me; and I am truly grateful to have found such people through such camps and these memorable experiences will stay with me for a lifetime. ๐€๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ฅ๐ž: Niveditha is a 12-year-old girl studying in Grade 7 of APL Global School, Chennai.
