*Al-Hashr 59:9*
And (it is also for) those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given (from the booty of Banû An-Nadîr), and give them (emigrants) preference over themselves even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful.
Translation: Muḥsin Khān/Taqī-ud-Dīn-al-Hilālī
*Imām As-Saʿdī Said:*
That is, one of the characteristics of the Ansār in which they surpassed others and distinguished themselves is selflessness, which is the most perfect kind of generosity, for they give precedence to others with regard to that which they themselves loved of wealth and other things, and they gave it to others even though they themselves needed it, and even when they were in need and poor.
*This can only be done by people of sublime character who love Allah ( سبحانه و تعالى) and give precedence to that over their own whims and desires and pleasures.*
*An example of that is the story of the Ansārī because of whom this verse was revealed, when he selflessly gave his food and the food of his family and children to his guest, and he and his family spent the night hungry.*
Giving precedence to others is the opposite of selfishness; selflessness is praiseworthy, whereas selfishness is blameworthy, because it is one of the characteristics of stinginess and covetousness.
Whoever is blessed with selflessness is protected from his own covetousness.
