A hijacking syndicate linked to at least 12 cases has been cracked by KZN police and security teams.
A sting operation - carried out by the SAPS Provincial/District Tracking Team, eThekwini District Detective Team, Provincial Crime Intelligence, and assisted by McCarthy Risk Management and Marshall Security - led to the arrests of two men who've been posing as advocates in recent months.
In almost all the cases, they would book a test drive of a car and ask to be picked up outside the Durban Central police station, which is next to the Durban Magistrate's Court.
During the test drive, with the assistance of a fellow syndicate member, the salesperson would be hijacked and robbed.
Dealerships across the city have been targeted in this way, with slight variations of the location.
It’s believed some of the cars have been moved across the border.
In the latest incident, a VW Polo GTi was requested but fortunately police were able to intercept the vehicle and capture the suspects.
A gun has been recovered.
